Academic Search Premier

Description: Indexing and abstracts are provided for 8,035 journals in the collection. This database offers information in nearly every area of academic study including: social sciences, humanities, education, computer sciences, engineering, physics, chemistry, language and linguistics, arts & literature, medical sciences, ethnic studies and more. In addition to journal coverage, Academic Search Premier provides full text information from a variety of source-types such as scholarly monographs. Full text information in this database dates as far back as 1985. An excellent source of articles about philosophical issues and history.

Description: Indexes both full text and citations in Archaeology, Area Studies, Art, Classical Studies, Communications, Dance, Film, Folklore, Gender Studies, History, Journalism, Linguistics, Literary & Social Criticism Literature, Music, Performing Arts, Philosophy, Religion and Theology. A very good source for articles about individual philosophers as well as philosophical issues.

WilsonSelect Plus Description: Full text articles in science, humanities, education and business. Provides indexed and abstracted records with accompanying full-text periodical articles, many of which are linked to citations in other FirstSearch databases. Includes US and international professional publications, academic journals, and trade magazines. Links to full-text articles. A very good source for articles on philosophical issues.

Episteme Links

Description: An organized collection of thousands of links to resources devoted to philosophy. The main sections are Philosophers and Topics and Traditions, both of which are searchable by time period and subject area. The Philosophers section provides quick links to fifty of the most frequently requested philosophers. Additional sections provide links to Images, Print and Electronic Journals, and E-Texts. (This latter category is searchable by keyword, philosopher, and topic category.) Adding additional value to this site are topic specific links to terms in several online philosophy encyclopedias including the online version of The Oxford Companion to Philosophy (1995).

Philosophy Pages

Description: An excellent starting point for studying Philosophy. The Dictionary of Philosophical Terms and Names is a concise guide with links to more information from such great Web resources as The Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy (IEP), The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy (SEP), The Ism Book (ISM), the Dictionary of Philosophy of Mind (DPM), and Downes's Guide to the Logical Fallacies (GLF). There's also a Timeline of Western Philosophers that begins in 600 B.C.E. and runs through to the present.

Description: Comprehensive collection of philosophy resources on the Internet. Not annotated, but the best are marked with a red star. This is a large file. The benefit is that you can search it with you Find button once it loads.

The Cambridge Dictionary of Philosophy

This resource is a dictionary of thousands of important terms. It also has substantial treatments of major philosophers, many of these entries run to thousands of words. It has hundreds of entries, often of 500 to 1,000 words, on other significant thinkers. In addition, it provides detailed overviews of the subfields such as epistemology and ethics.

The Columbia History of Western Philosophy

This one volume history of philosophy stresses the work of the principle thinkers of the West. Articles include a bibliography of the best secondary works on each philosopher. There are also essays on major themes such as humanism and on periods of philosophy.

Dictionary of Philosophy and Religion : Eastern and Western Thought
Reference B41 .R43 1966
This dictionary provides short articles on philosophers including some analyses of the thought of major philosophers and religious leaders. Short explications of terms are an important contribution of this source.

Dictionary of the History of Thought

This 5 volume source is composed of lengthy articles about ideas covered in an historical context. Articles are written by experts and are signed. Each essay contains sources for further reading.

The Encyclopedia of Philosophy

Published in 1967, with a supplement in 1996, this is considered a major reference work in philosophy. It contains substantial articles on all major philosophers and philosophical ideas. Bibliographies are included with articles.
